Bio

Hello and welcome to 7th grade math!  My name is Glen Dagger and I am very excited to return to Athlos Leadership Academy.  I completed my undergraduate degree with a major in mathematics and am currently pursuing my Master's degree in secondary math education.  When I am not in the classroom, you can find me kayaking, hiking, camping, cooking, playing guitar, and writing/composing music.

Having a strong passion for mathematics personally, one of my greatest hopes for the year is that every student leaves the classroom with increased feelings of confidence in the subject and a greater appreciation for mathematical thinking outside of the classroom.  Math anxiety is a very real phenomenon and I would like to instill in every student (and parent!) the idea that everyone has the ability to learn and excel in math no matter what.

Please feel free to contact me regarding any questions or concerns that you may have.  Looking forward to meeting and working with all of you!

Trimester 1 is coming to an end!

We had our last summative assessment of the trimester this past Friday (chapter 3).  The retake will take place this Friday during Specials.

ALL missing homework must be submitted by the end of the day Friday, 11/22.  Any homework from Chapter 4 on will be graded as part of Trimester 2.

Reviewing For Test

We will be continuing our Chapter 3 review in class on Thursday.  All students are allowed one blue note sheet (half-sheet of paper) for personal, handwritten notes to use on the test on Friday (you can write WHATEVER you want).  I handed out Review Organizers that break down the chapter into the 8 sections and can help students organize and prioritize important information.

There is also a study guide consisting of 19 multiple choice problems that was handed out in class today, which will be a great way to practice and review the skills that will be tested on Friday.  I highly recommend solving the problem first and THEN comparing your answer to the options provided.  I will distribute answer keys in class tomorrow.

Additionally, extra practice problems are included at the end of the book (or online textbook) in the "Extra Practice" section under Chapter 3.

Practice is the best way to improve!

Chapter 3 Test On Friday!

The Chapter 3 summative assessment will take place in class this Friday, 11/15.  It will be the last summative assessment grade for Trimester 1.  The retake will take place sometime next week.  The following topics were covered in Chapter 3:
  • Adding/Subtracting/Multiplying/Dividing Decimals (Positive and Negative)
  • Adding/Subtracting/Multiplying/Dividing Fractions (Positive and Negative)
  • Solving One-Step Equations Containing Decimals
  • Solving One-Step Equations Containing Fractions
Most of these skills are part of the 6th grade curriculum - the only new skills in 7th grade are working with the negative values as well as positives!

Multiplying Decimals - Khan Academy

Extra help with multiplying decimals! (Remember: if the signs of the numbers being multiplied are the SAME, the product will be positive. If the signs are DIFFERENT, the product will be negative.)

Dividing Decimals - Khan Academy

Extra help dividing decimals! Only new thing to keep in mind is that when the signs of the numbers are the SAME, the answer is positive. When the signs of the numbers are DIFFERENT, the answer is negative.

Service Project - Feed My Starving Children

All 7th graders will be travelling to Feed My Starving Children (located at 401 93rd Ave NW in Coon Rapids, MN) for our service project on Wednesday, October 30, 2019.  Students will be helping to pack lifesaving meals and make it possible to send nutritious meals to children around the world.
We will be leaving by bus from Athlos at 9:00am and will return at 12:00, in time for lunch at school as usual.  There is no cost for the trip.
Please let me know if you have any questions.  Permission slips are due to homeroom teachers by Wednesday, October 23, 2019.
Thank you!

Chapter 2 Test on Wednesday!

The summative assessment for Chapter 2 will take place during class on Wednesday, October 16.  It will cover all 7 sections of chapter 2, including comparing integers, integer addition/subtraction/multiplication/division, solving equations containing integers, and comparing and ordering rational numbers.  We will spend all of our class time on Monday and Tuesday reviewing.
Please take this time to catch up on missing Chapter 2 homework and review notes from this unit!

Chapter 1 Retake - Wednesday 10/2

The retake for the Chapter 1 test will take place during Fitness on Wednesday, 10/2.  All students MUST have all chapter 1 homework submitted in order to be able to take the retake.  Please use the first versions of your tests as a study guide!

Chapter 1 moved to Wednesday

The Chapter 1 Summative Test will be moved back to Wednesday which will give us some more time this week to finish our Jeopardy! Review game and review the study guide.
I am attaching a copy of the study guide (which is very similar in appearance to the actual test) for students to practice.  This study guide must be completed (all problems attempted) by Tuesday in order to receive credit as a 10 point homework assignment.

Chapter 1 Test on Tuesday!

The first summative assessment in math class of the year will take place during class on Tuesday, September 24.  We will be reviewing all Chapter 1 material in class on Friday and Monday.  I will also hand out a practice version of the test as a study guide on Monday.  Start looking over your notes and homework so we can answer any questions you might still have!

Planners

If you have not done so yet, please remember to bring in $5.00 to purchase a planner for the year. It is required for all 7th grade students!

Probability Test on Wednesday 5/22

The last math test of the school year is this Wednesday! The test covers the first three sections of Chapter 10 on Probability.  We will review tomorrow, have the test on Wednesday, and the retake will take place on Friday.

2 Summative Assessments to go!

The first summative assessment on Multi-Step Equations (chapter 11) is taking place on Friday May 3rd.  The retake will be offered next Thursday (May 9th).

The second summative assessment is TBD but will be based around probability (chapter 10).
