About Me

Hello! My name is Ms. Arens, and I am excited to be exploring science with you. I graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a B.S. in Biology. Some of my previous work experiences include working for the Forest Service, The Nature Conservancy, and as a wilderness canoe guide. I decided to go back to school to become an educator when I realized how much I enjoy helping students find their passions and get excited about the world around us. I also love to travel and have lived in several different places around the world. A few years ago I lived in Morocco studying argan trees and have even lived in the jungles of Costa Rica working with sloths. I also enjoy baking and cooking, surfing and playing soccer, and foraging and gardening for food.

If you have any questions for me, please feel free to reach out. I am happy to help! :)

Athlos Families,

The United States Department of Agriculture is allowing schools to provide meals for the 2021-2022 school year through a provision of the National School Lunch Program called the Seamless Summer Option (SSO). A waiver has been issued in order to support access to nutritious meals while minimizing potential exposure to COVID-19. Our school has chosen to use this waiver and operate the SSO which enables us to provide meals free of charge for all students. No application is required to receive this free meal benefit.

However, your child(ren) may qualify for additional benefits such as reduced fees or the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) which is a federal temporary emergency nutrition benefit that is loaded onto electronic cards for families to purchase food. At public schools, your application also helps the school qualify for education funds and discounts.

How to Submit a Meal Application:

#1 - Recommended: Complete the application through your Parent Portal Account by clicking here.

     * Visit the School Meals page on the website or click here for instructions on completing the application via the Parent Portal.

     * Have an account and need login support? Click on the support links on the login screen.

     * Still need assistance? Email and someone will be happy to assist you.

     * Families that are new to Athlos Leadership Academy; instructions and account activation codes will be emailed in the coming weeks.

#2 - Download and print the application PDF by clicking here.

#3 - Pick up a copy from the school office or black drop box located at the front of the school building.

Week 4 Update

Thank you all for your patience last week with me being home sick. All grades should be up to date in the gradebook. If you have any questions, please reach out.
Science Livestreams will resume again this week. :)
Monday - Test review and wrap-up Topic 1, Introduction to Topic 2: Physical Science - matter and substances
Tuesday - Physical vs. chemical properties
Wednesday - Elements, atoms, & the periodic table
Thursday - Chemical bonds, molecules, & compounds (Formative Assessment)
Friday - Mixtures: homogenous vs. heterogeneous mixtures

Update 9/22

Thank you all for your patience. I will be gone through the rest of this week. So there will be NO LIVESTREAMS for science until I am back on Monday (9/27).
I apologize for the inconveniences and confusion this has caused, so I wanted to be sure to share a couple of things.
1. Students will hopefully still be able to take their Topic 1 tests this week, but I will be changing it to a Formative instead of a Summative because of the lack of organization due to my absence.
2. Grades in the gradebook are up to date. So check those out because students have been working hard on those assignments. :)
Like always, please send me a message if there is anything I can do to help!

No Livestream for Ms. Arens Tuesday 9/21/21

Distance Learners -  I am so sorry, but there is no Livestream again Tuesday 9/21/21 because I am still absent. My in-person students were not able to do the study guide assignment in science class on Monday, so they will be doing that Tuesday instead. If you did not do this assignment yet, please open Schoology and follow those instructions during your science time. If you are completed with the study guide Google Form, you have no new material for science today.
In-Person Learners - Yesterday, you were told to watch a movie instead of the study guide assignment, so we are bumping our schedule back by one day. You will do your study guide Google Form in Schoology on Tuesday 9/21/21 and you will take the test on Wednesday 9/22/21.
Please send me a message if you have any questions!

Week 3 Update

NOTE: I will be gone on Monday (9/20), and possibly other days this week. So please reach out to me if you have questions! (
DISTANCE LEARNERS: There will be NO LIVESTREAM on Monday 9/20 for Ms. Arens' classes. Instead you should follow the instructions in Schoology.
You have already shown how focused you can be when you are working, so please keep it up and help the sub if needed.
Here is the plan for this week:
Monday - Review day for Topic 1 Cumulative Test (9/21) - Google Form study guide (Formative Assessment)
Tuesday - TEST DAY! :) (Formative or Summative TBD)
Wednesday - Begin Patterns in Nature mini-topic
Thursday - Patterns in Nature mini-topic
Friday - Finish Patterns in Nature mini-topic

Paper Airplane Experiments Due Tomorrow 9/17

This is a reminder that we are finishing our week-long paper airplane experiments in class today. This is a summative assessment. If you missed a section of the experiment, please go to Week 2 in Schoology to find the weekly slides with the requirements. Best of luck!

Week 2 Update

I hope you enjoyed our first week together. I know I sure did!
Here is the plan for this week:
Monday - Forming hypotheses and beginning to hypothesize about paper airplane experimentation
Tuesday - Discuss controlled experiments and differentiate between independent and dependent variables
Wednesday - Begin Paper Airplane Experiment (Summative Assessment) due Friday
Thursday - Interpreting data and communicating clearly
Friday - Scientific law vs. scientific theory (Paper Airplane Experiment due)
