Bio

My name is Jennifer Hodgman, this is my second year teaching at Athlos Leadership Academy. I am excited to be here working with your students! I graduated from St. Cloud State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. I live in Ramsey, Minnesota. I am married and we have a son, who is in middle school. In my free time I like to spend time at the cabin and the lake. My family spends lots of time at the race track during the summer racing! I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I am looking forward to working with my students this year helping them grow and reach their goals!

Hello first grade families!  

Math:  

This week we will finish unit 5. We will take the unit 5 assessment on Wednesday. Then we will begin unit six. In unit six we will be learning about telling time, adding two-digit numbers in story problems, and place value. We will also review fact families and partners of ten. This week we will work on telling time to the hour and half hour. 

Homework:  

We will have math homework activity every night. Homework is mandatory and will be graded. Please make sure your student completes their math homework nightly.  

Language Arts 

Reading: 

We will begin unit six titled, Stories Teach Many Lessons. We will draw inferences in the stories we read.  

Language Skills:  

We will start verb-subject agreement. We will learn how the verb must agree with the subject of a sentence.  

Writing:  

This week we will make sentences with “not” contractions.  

Spelling/Phonics:  

We will be making and sounding out long “I” words. This week's spelling words are; mine, nice, line, ride, time, white, spice, slide, life, bike. 

We will take a spelling and reading assessment on Friday.  

Homework: Make sure your child is reading and working on sight words for at least twenty minutes each night.

Please make sure your student has some kind of uniform approved long sleeve shirt either under their uniform shirt or an approved zip up sweatshirt every day, the classroom temperature does vary over the day!! Please make sure your student has a winter hat, gloves, coat, snow pants and boots every day.

Hello first grade families!  

Math:  

This week we will complete unit five. In unit five we will be learning about place value, comparing numbers, and adding two-digit numbers.  

Homework:  

We will have math homework activity every night. Homework is mandatory and will be graded. Please make sure your student is completing their math homework nightly.  

Language Arts 

Reading: 

We will learn about technology in the non-fiction texts we read and discuss. We will work on comparing and contrasting the stories we study.  

Writing: 

This week we will become authors and illustrators and create our own books.  

Language Skills: This week we will be learning about prefixes.  

Spelling/Phonics:  

We will be making and sounding out soft G and C words. This week’s spelling words are; strange, race, giant, huge, city, circle, center, cent, brace, & space. Please study and practice these at home each night! 

We will take a spelling and reading assessment on Friday.  

Homework: Make sure your child is reading and working on sight words for at least twenty minutes each night.  

Science:  

We will continue unit three in science. We will become scientists and learn all about light and how it works.

The temperature in the classroom/school can vary at times, please make sure your student has long sleeves under their uniform shirt. They can also bring an Athlos uniform approved sweatshirt or sweater, they can put on as needed. Several students get cold at times and it is to hard to wear big bulky winter jackets during class!

Hello first grade families!

This week and next week are FREE DRESS DAYS!!!!!!!! The students do not need to wear uniforms if they do not want to! Have fun and enjoy these days!

Math:

This week we will review ten more and ten less of a number, money value, addition fact families and adding 3 numbers.

Homework: We will have math homework activity every night. Homework is mandatory and will be graded. Please make sure your student is completing their math homework nightly.

Language Arts

Reading:

We will compare and contrast characters in the texts we read, while identifying who is telling the story.

Writing:

This week we will continue to write sentences with each kind of punctuation and include all the parts of a complete sentence. 

Spelling:

Spelling words this week are; string, screen, split, strap, scrub, squid, sprint, splash, square, and sprout.

We will take a spelling and reading assessment on Thursday.

Homework: Make sure your child is reading and working on sight words for at least twenty minutes each night.

Science:

We will continue our science unit about sound. This week students will describe different sounds such as pitch and volume. Also we will explore how sound helps us communicate.

Hello first grade families!  

Math: This week we will be reviewing lessons we have learned so far this year. We will be learning doubles and practice counting on, when adding.  

Homework: We will have math homework activity every day. This is mandatory and will be graded. Please make sure your student is completing their math homework nightly.  

LA: This week we will finish unit two in our Benchmark reading curriculum.  We will be reviewing how the character looks, feels, acts like, and something the character says in the story.  We will be continue working on end punctuation, when to use capital letters, and creating complete sentences. On Wednesday we will have a reading comprehension and spelling assessment. Help your child spell and read l consonant blend words, such as: black, blast, clam, clap, glad, glee, plan, play, slam, slap. (Spelling assessment will not be in the grade book at this time).

Please send a uniform approved sweatshirt or sweater (soild black, light grey, dark grey, red or navy blue) with your student everyday. (They can leave it in their cubby so they have it!) There are several students who get cold during the day and do not have a sweatshirt to put on. 

Students will come home with a red homework folder daily. This is where their homework and sight words will be kept. Completion of homework is required and graded. Please work on sight words nightly with your student!

Oct. 17 Bingo for Books-families are welcome for after school event 

Oct. 18 Unity Day-wear orange to spread unity. This is NOT a free dress day. Students can wear orange under their uniform, orange socks and orange hair accessories. 

Oct.19th-20th No school MEA Break  

Oct. 27 Super Hero Day-Free dress day for all students  

Oct. 30- Nov. 3 Book Fair-Students may purchase books  

Nov. 2 Picture Retake Day

Week 2 Newsletter

Mrs. Hodgman’s Newsletter for the Week September 11th 

Hello first grade families! 

We had a fun first week of school! It was so nice getting to know each other!  

Math: We will begin unit one in our Everyday Math curriculum. In unit one we will be reviewing skills learned in kindergarten.  We will be reviewing number sense, adding on number lines and tally marks. We will have math homework every day. 

LA: This week we will begin our new Benchmark curriculum. We will be learning about living things and life cycles. We will be working on sentence structure while creating complete sentences. We will find the main idea of the stories we read.  

Homework: Make sure your child is reading and working on sight words for at least twenty minutes each night.  

Reading Skills: This week we will be reviewing letter names and sounds, CVC words and making three letter words.  

Reminders:  

Students will come home with a red homework folder daily. The side marked school needs to be completed and come back to school. The items on the home side should be taken out each night and left at home. Students will have a math activity to complete each night that is due the next school day. Completion of homework is required and graded.  Students will have a set of the sight words they need to learn kept in homework folder, please work on sight words nightly with your student.  

Send a healthy snack with your student each day. 

Make sure students have gym shoes daily. Students can leave an extra pair at school if they’d like.  

Make sure you let the front office know of changes of bus or parent pick up changes.

Grand Parents Day Breakfast is Oct. 10th. You will (deadline for families to submit RSVP forms and payment is Friday, September 22nd)
