Bio

My name is Jennifer Hodgman, this is my second year teaching at Athlos Leadership Academy. I am excited to be here working with your students! I graduated from St. Cloud State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. I live in Ramsey, Minnesota. I am married and we have a son, who is in middle school. In my free time I like to spend time at the cabin and the lake. My family spends lots of time at the race track during the summer racing! I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I am looking forward to working with my students this year helping them grow and reach their goals!

Week 3 Newsletter

Look at the Week September 17th 

Hello first grade families! 

We have had a great first couple of weeks! We are enjoying getting to know each other and school routines.  

Math: We will continue unit one in our Everyday Math curriculum. We will be reviewing skills learned in kindergarten.  We will be reviewing number sense, adding on number lines and tally marks. We will have math homework every day. 

 

LA: This week we will continue our new Benchmark curriculum. We will be learning about living things and life cycles. We will be working on sentence structure while creating complete sentences. We will find the main idea of the stories we read. On Friday we will be taking our second reading comprehension assessment.  

Homework: Make sure your child is reading and working on sight words for at least twenty minutes each night.  

Reading Skills: This week we will be reviewing letter names and sounds, CVC words and making three letter words.  

 

Science: We will begin our new science curriculum. We will be learning about life cycles. 

Reminders:  

Students will come home with a red homework folder daily. The side marked school needs to be completed and come back to school. The items on the home side should be taken out each night and left at home. Students will have a math activity to complete each night that is due the next school day. Completion of home work is required and graded.  Students will have a set of the sight words they need to learn kept in homework folder, please work on sight words nightly with your student.  

Send a healthy snack with your student each day. 

Make sure students have gym shoes daily. Students can leave an extra pair at school if they’d like.  

Make sure you let the front office know of changes to bus or parent pick up schedules.

Grand Parents Breakfast Oct. 10th (deadline for families to submit RSVP forms and payment is Friday, September 22nd) 

Picture day is September 21st. This will be a free dress day for all students.

Raz-kids Reading website for at home!

I just want to apologize for sending the wrong link in the newsletter for the Raz-kids website. I copied the wrong teacher link. Below you will find the correct link for my class! You can just click this link and it will take you right to my class page, then your student will click their name and then enter their lunch number for the pass word! I have assigned books for each student to read. I will be assigning assessments later for each student to complete. Please let me know if you have any issues or questions about accessing Raz-Kids!

Newsletter Week 5

Newsletter Week 5- October 2nd 

Hello first grade families! 

Math: We will continue unit 2 in math. This week we will be memorizing partners of ten, adding by counting on starting at the biggest number, comparing numbers while using tally marks in graphs.  

Homework: We will have math homework activity every day. 

LA: This week we will begin unit two in our reading curriculum.  We will be reviewing what the character looks, feels, acts like and something the character says in the story.  We will be continue working on end punctuation and complete sentences.  On Friday we will have a reading comprehension test, spelling and an end punctuation assessment. (Spelling assessment will not be in the grade book at this time).  

Homework: Make sure your child is reading and working on sight words for at least twenty minutes each night.

Reading Skills: This week we will be learning to spell three letter words with short "e".  We will read words with “th” sound. If your child does not know their letter names and sounds PLEASE review them daily.  

Science: We will be learning about patterns in animal behavior. We will continue to learn about the life cycle of plants.

Science experiments: We have planted seeds, we will observe the plant life cycle as it moves through each state. The students are very excited to see their seeds growing!

Reminders:  

Students will come home with a red homework folder daily. The side marked school needs to be completed and come back to school. The items on the home side should be taken out each night and left at home. Students will have a math activity to complete each night that is due the next school day. Please make sure to send return the red folder to school every day. Completion of home work is required and graded.  Students will have a set of the sight words they need to learn kept in homework folder, please work on sight words nightly with your student.  Students will be tested on their sight words this week they should be passing on to the next level, if passed your student will come home with a new set of sight words to learn.

Fall Weather: As the weather is getting cooler, please make sure to dress your student accordingly. I have several students who get cold and don’t have long sleeves or a zip up sweatshirt to put on. Please send a sweater or zip up sweatshirt with your student, they can leave it in their cubby, so they have it every day. Please make sure it is Athlos uniform approved. If it is not uniform approved, they will only be allowed to wear it during recess. Also make sure your student is in uniform daily. Under shirts must be an approved uniform color as well.

Make sure you let the front office know of changes to bus or parent pick up schedules, as necessary.

Math: We will finish unit one in our Everyday Math curriculum. We will be reviewing for the unit assessment Monday and taking the unit one assessment on Tuesday. Wednesday we will begin unit two. We will be learning about partners of ten this week.  

Homework: We will have math homework activity every day. Completion of homework is required and graded!

LA: This week we will complete unit one in our new Benchmark curriculum. We will be learning how living things grow and change. We will also be describing characters in the stories we read. We will be working on end punctuation and sentence structure while creating complete sentences. We will be working on short o and spelling short o words. On Friday we will be taking our third reading comprehension and end punctuation assessment.  

Homework: Make sure your child is reading and working on sight words for at least twenty minutes each night. Sight word levels will be tested this week. Each student has a goal to pass their sight word list by the end of the week.  

Please have your student read online on their Razkids account.

Newsletter for Week October 9th 

Hello first grade families! Can’t believe it's already the sixth week of school!  

Math: We will complete unit 2 in math. This week we will be memorizing partners of ten, adding by counting on starting at the biggest number, finding number partners on a tens chart, and comparing numbers while using tally marks in graphs. Friday we will take the unit two assessment.  

Homework: We will have math homework activity every day. This is mandatory and will be graded. Please make sure your student is completing their math homework nightly.  

LA: This week we will continue unit two in our Benchmark reading curriculum.  We will be reviewing what the character looks, feels, acts like, and something the character says in the story.  We will continue working on end punctuation, when to use capital letters, and creating complete sentences. On Friday we will have a reading comprehension test and spelling assessment. Help your child spell three letter words with u as the middle sound, such as: cut, put, cup, cub, but, bug, hug, nut, sun, and mud. (Spelling assessment will not be in the grade book at this time).  

Homework: Make sure your child is reading and working on sight words for at least twenty minutes each night.

Week 1

       Hello first grade families!

Welcome to the first week of school! It was so nice meeting all of you at welcome night!

This week we will be working on getting to know one another, classroom routines, and assessing student levels in reading and math. There will be no math homework this week.

Please began reading and working on sight words for at least fifteen minutes each night with your student. 

Important reminders:

First day of school September 5th, 2023.

Please send gym shoes daily, students can leave an extra pair at school.

Please send a healthy snack with your student daily.

If you did not attend open house please send school supplies with your student on the first day of school.

Monday – Thursday 7:30AM-3:30PM

Friday 7:30AM-12:00PM (Lunch Provided)

EXTENDED DAY HOURS:

Monday – Friday 6:30AM – 7:30AM

Monday-Thursday 3:30-5:00PM
