Peek of the week for Sept 30- Oct 4

Hello second grade families!

Math: This week we will be starting Unit 2 on Fact Strategies. We will cover grouping by 10’s, addition number stories, doubles and combinations of 10, making-10 strategy, and near-doubles strategy this week.

Homework: Your student will have a packet that is due on October 7.  This contains math and spelling/reading homework for the week.  Study for the spelling test on October 4.

Language Arts: This week we will start Unit 2 on Characters and Learn and Grow. We will learn what we can do when we face problems. The phonics skills this week will focus on long o and vowel teams and spellings.

Spelling: This week’s words are: broke, both, grow, globe, toe, bowl, float, throw, roast, and going. Please practice these words with your student every day. The spelling test will be at the end of the week. 

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Social Studies: We finish our first unit in Social Studies, so now we will switch to the first unit in Science.

Science: We will start Unit 1 on Properties of Matter. We learn how different materials can be used. We will also learn about solids, liquids, and gases.

Other Reminders: Please remember to send a healthy snack to school with your student every day.  If you have not paid the $20 activity fee for your student yet, please log into your parent portal account online and pay this fee as soon as possible. If you did not send a new 1 inch 3-ring binder with your student at the beginning of the year, please send one with your student. We are starting a new take home binder program this year.

Peek of the week for Sept 23-27

Hello second grade families!

Math: This week we will be finishing Unit 1 with reviewing skip counting, comparing numbers with greater than, less than, and equal numbers. We will review and have the Unit 1 Test at the end of this week!

Homework: Your student will have math homework each night to complete and return to school the next day. 

Language Arts: This week we will finish Unit 1, and learn about the different habitats around the world and how living things get what they need to survive. This week’s phonics skills focus long vowels and vowel teams: a, ai, ea, ay, a_e.

Spelling: This week’s words are- break, chain, April, great, mail, paint, play, blame, cake, and stay. Please practice these words with your student. The spelling test will be at the end of the week. 

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Social Studies: We will continue Chapter 1 about Families Today and in the Past. We will learn how does life change throughout history. We will learn about family, different kinds of families, and life then and now.

Peek of the week for Sept 16-20

Hello second grade families!

Math: This week we will continue Unit 1 reviewing finding equivalent names for numbers, making combinations of 10, even and odd number patterns and skip counting.

Homework: Your student will have a packet that comes home Monday.  It will be due on September 23!  Spelling test will be at the end of the week, so please study the words attached to the homework!

Language Arts: This week we will continue Unit 1 and learn about the different habitats around the world and how living things get what they need to survive. This week’s phonics skills focus on closed and open syllables.

Spelling: This week’s words are- go, we, she, no, open, den, dentist, napkin, problem, and silent. Please practice these words with your student. The spelling test will be at the end of the week. 

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night

Social Studies: We will continue Chapter 1 about Families Today and in the Past. We will learn how does life change throughout history. We will learn about family, different kinds of families, and life then and now.

September 9-13

Hello 2nd Grade Families!  We made it through our first week of school. We spent the week getting to know each other, building community in our classrooms, and learning routines and expectations for the school year.
 
Math: This week we will begin Unit 1 reviewing adding and subtracting, using number lines, tally marks, coin values and values of coin combinations, and using patterns to help solve math problems.
 
Homework:  A packet will be coming home Monday and will be due the following Monday with math practice.
 
Language Arts:  This week we will begin Unit 1 on Habitats where we will learn  about different habitats around the world and how animals get what they need to survive. This weeks phonics will focus on short vowel sounds, a, e, i, o, and u along with blends at the beginning of the words.
 
Spelling:  Spelling words will be graph, stand, chest, fetch, flip, this, cloth, shop, just, budge
 
Homework:  Read 20 minutes a night and record on the reading calendar.  Study for spelling test on Friday.  There are worksheets in the homework packet that will help with this!
 
Social Studies: We will begin Unit 1 on Families Today and in the Past.  We will learn how life changes throughout history,  We will learn about family,  different kids of family, and life then and now.
 
Reminders:  Please send a healthy snack daily for your student.
