Week 4 September 22-26

Hello first grade families!

Here is a look at our 4th week of school!

Language Arts: This week we will continue learning about life cycles and how living things grow and change. We will be working on short “o” words. We will work on writing complete sentences and capitalization. We will be describing the characters and the setting in the stories we read.

This week spelling words are; hot, for, jump, mop, one, log, dot, crops, log, & frog. Spelling test will be on Friday! Please practice these spelling words with your child nightly.

Math: This week we will continue our Everyday Math curriculum, "Unit 1” focuses on foundational concepts for first grade, including place value (especially tens and ones), number sense, and the development of addition and subtraction strategies within 20.

Science: We will continue our science unit on life cycles.

Nightly student homework:

spelling words, math worksheet, Weekly packet worksheet,  practice sight words, and reading for twenty minutes each night.

Upcoming Events:

· September 26th MN Sports Day! Free dress for all students! GO VIKES!:)

· Grandparents Breakfast on Tuesday, October 7th! The deadline for families to submit RSVP forms is Friday, September 30th

· October 1, 2025 Picture Day

· October 7, 2025 Grandparents Breakfast

· October 22, 2025 Unity Day

· October 27-30, 2025 Book Fair

· October 28, 2025 Bingo for Books

 

Reminders:

· Send a healthy snack with your student daily! We have a late lunch at 12:25 and need a snack to help them through the morning!

· Make sure your child has shoes for fitness. We go to fitness on Monday’s and Tuesday’s.  They will not be able to participate if they are not wearing appropriate shoes.

· Send weather appropriate clothing with your child daily as we go outside for recess daily.

· Please make sure your child is reading and working on homework every night.

· Please communicate with the front office about any end of the day transportation changes by 2:00 o’clock PM.  

As a reminder, the Student Hours are:
Monday – Thursday 7:30AM-3:00PM
Friday 7:30AM-12:00PM (Lunch Provided)
It is very important that your student is on time for school each day!!!
 
EXTENDED DAY HOURS:
Monday – Friday 6:30AM – 7:30AM
Monday-Thursday 3:30-5:00PM
Friday 12:00-5:00PM
 

· Please make sure you are checking your child’s red take home folder nightly. Students should bring their homework folder to school daily.

Week 3 September 15-19, 2025

Hello first grade families!

This week students will be taking the Fastbridge reading assessment.

This week spelling words are; hit, pick, him, little, with, kids, sit, big, kick, & lids. Spelling test will be on Friday. Please practice these spelling words with your child nightly.

Math: This week we will begin our Everyday Math curriculum, "Unit 1” focuses on foundational concepts for first grade, including place value (especially tens and ones), number sense, and the development of addition and subtraction strategies within 20.

spelling words, math activity worksheets, 1 page in the weekly packet, practice sight words, and reading for twenty minutes each night.

Week 2

Hello first grade families!

Here Is a look at our 2nd week of school!

We had such an amazing week getting to know each other last week. I am so excited for this school year!

Language Arts: This week we will be learning about life cycles and how living things grow and change. We will be working on short “A” words. We will work on writing complete sentences and capitalization. We will be describing the characters in the stories we read.

This week spelling words are; and, add, ask, bat, apple, has, pack, sat, dad, & mad. Spelling test will be on Friday. Please practice these spelling words with your child nightly.

Math: This week we will be doing our beginning of the year Fastbridge assessments.

Social Studies: This week we will be working on citizenship. We will learn about being good citizens in our school and our communities. We will plan goals and our hopes and dreams for the school year and the future.

Nightly student homework:

spelling words, math activity worksheets, practice sight words, and reading for twenty minutes each night.  On Monday I will send home the spelling words and weekly homework packet.  Please return completed math homework daily and the weekly packet on Friday.

Welcome Ms Fowell's 1st grade class!!

Welcome to Ms Fowell's First Grade

 

I am excited to welcome you to the 2025 2026 school year! I’m looking forward to having your child as a student in 1st grade. This year, students will be learning deeply across all subjects through a variety of interactive and engaging activities . In order to have a successful year, my most important goal is to create a community of learners in our classroom. I want your child to feel valued at school every single day.

 

This is my 8th year at Athlos Leadership Academy. I love teaching first grade. I am so excited to be your child’s teacher this year!  First grade is a very special time in a child’s life, and you will see your child blossom immensely throughout the year.

I was born and raised in Southwest Wisconsin. I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree from North Central University, Minneapolis.  I have worked for over 25 years as an educator. This is my fifth year as a 1st grade teacher here at Athlos.  I have previously worked as a Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, building sub and mentor teacher.

I currently live in Columbia Heights. I have a wonderful, adopted Kenyan family that I spend lots of time with.  I traveled to Kenya for the 3rd time this summer and can’t wait to go back!  In my free time I love learning, reading, spending time with family, and many outdoor activities.

I love teaching at Athlos Leadership Academy. Athlos provides kids the skills they need for life long success. This year we will not only be learning academics, children will also be nurtured to grow in character and athleticism.

We are going to have an awesome year full of fun and learning!
