Course Description

Fifth Grade

  • Number Sense and Computation: mastery of division; concepts of decimals and fractions; addition and subtraction of decimals and fractions.
  • Algebra: solving basic algebraic expression; use properties of arithmetic such as the Distributive Property to solve expressions; use patterns, graphs and tables to solve pattern problems.
  • Geometry & Measurement: finding the volume of three-dimensional figures; finding area of figures using formulas.
  • Data Analysis & Probability: analyze the mean, median, and mode of data; create and understand double-bar graphs and line graphs.

Sixth Grade

  • Number Sense & Computation: Exploring the concepts of positive and negative numbers; solidifying understanding of decimals, fractions, and percents; fluency with addition, subtracting, multiplication, and division of decimals and fractions; understanding and using ratios to solve problems.
  • Algebra & Patterns: solving multi-step variable problems; understanding and applying properties of algebra, such as the Distributive Property. 
  • Geometry & Measurement:  using formulas to find surface area and volume of figures; understand and use relationships of angles in geometric figures to solve problems; use ratios to convert between units of measurement.
  • Data Analysis & Probability: use probabilities to solve problems; represent probabilities as fractions, percents, and decimals.

Seventh Grade

  • Number Sense & Computation: read, write, and compare positive and negative integers; perform calculations with positive and negative numbers.
  • Algebra: understand and apply concepts of proportionality; use proportions to solve expressions; apply order of operations and properties of arithmetic to solve multi-step variable expressions; represent situations with algebraic expressions.
  • Geometry & Measurement: Use proportions to apply and justify formulas when calculating area and volume of figures; analyze the effects of scale changes, slides, translations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures; graph slides, translations, and reflections.
  • Data Analysis & Probability: use mean, median, and mode to analyze data and draw conclusions; display and analyze data using circle graphs and histograms; calculate probabilities.

Eighth Grade

  • Number Sense & Computation: classifying numbers as rational or irrational; compare and locate real numbers on a number line; know and apply properties of positive and negative integers; scientific notation.
  • Algebra: concepts of linear and non-linear functions; represent linear and non-linear functions in tables, graphs, and equations; evaluate algebraic expressions and justify solutions; solve equations and inequalities; slope-intercept, point-slope, and standard forms of linear equations; use relationships between square numbers and square roots to solve equations.
  • Geometry & Measurement: solve problems using the Pythagorean Theorem; solve problems involving parallel and perpendicular lines on a coordinate system.
  • Data Analysis & Probability: interpret data using scatterplots and lines of best fit.
