Our Week at a Glance
 October 13-15
 
Hello second grade families!
Please send your child to school with a healthy snack each day.  We will have a 10 minute snack time in the morning, so please send in something that your child can eat within that time frame.  Some healthy snacks include:  fruit, vegetables, popcorn, crackers, etc.  Please NO candy, donuts, cookies, etc. for snack.  Water bottles are allowed at school with water only!
 
Math:  In math we will be working on our 2nd Unit.  We will be learning many different addition strategies to help with our addition.  These strategies include: counting up, counting back, making 10, doubles facts, etc. 
 
Homework: Your student will have math and spelling homework each week to complete.  Homework will go home on Monday’s and needs to be completed and returned the following Monday.  
 
** There will be no homework due to it being a short week**
 
Language Arts: We will be spending the next few weeks in our Characters Learn and Grow unit.  We will be talking about creating mental images, as well as setting and plot.  Describing the characters in the stories is also something we will be working on in this unit.  A big portion of the unit is going to be spent retelling the stories we read!
 
Spelling: There is no spelling test this week due to it being a short week!
 
Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 
 
Social Studies:  We will be starting unit 2 this week.  This unit we will discuss location, landforms, and maps.  We will be differentiating between various maps. We will learn how to read maps and understand the different features they have along with what they mean!

Spelling: Our spelling words this week consist of ways to make the long e sound.  Our spelling words for the week are here, thief, funny, piece, need, key, clean, happy, queen, leaf**We will have a spelling test on Friday. 

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Science:  We will be starting science this week.  This unit we will discuss the properties of matter (solid, liquid, gas).  We will be differentiating between these properties and describing what each property is/used for.

Hello second grade families!

Please send your child to school with a healthy snack each day.  We will have a 10 minute snack time in the morning, so please send in something that your child can eat within that time frame.  Some healthy snacks include:  fruit, vegetables, popcorn, crackers, etc.  Please NO candy, donuts, cookies, etc. for snack.  Water bottles are allowed at school with water only!

Math:  In math we will be looking at numbers on a number line, adding and subtracting on a number line, skip counting by 2’s (even/odd numbers), and looking at patterns.  We are identifying coins and their values.  We will have our first unit test September 29th.

Homework: Your student will have math and spelling homework each week to complete.  Homework will go home on Monday’s and needs to be completed and returned the following Monday.  Homework for this week will need to be turned in on Monday, September 29.

Language Arts: We will be finishing our unit Habitats Around the World.  We will be reading some informative texts and start learning how to identify the Central Idea (Main topic).  We will also be looking at graphic features (title, headings, vocabulary, and pictures).

Spelling: Our spelling words this week consist of ways to make the long a sound.  Our spelling words for the week are April, play, blame, stay, cake, mail, chain, paint, break, great **We will have a spelling test on Friday. 

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Social Studies:  We will be finishing our unit about family and community.  What makes up a community?  What are some traditions in our families?  This week we are talking about primary and secondary sources.

Spelling: Our spelling words for the week are graph, stand, chest, fetch, flip, this, cloth, shop, just, budge  **We will have a spelling test on Friday.  This week we are talking about words that contain the short vowels!

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Social Studies:  We will be starting our unit on Community.  What makes up a community.

Hello second grade families! Welcome back to school!  We are excited to meet our students and get to know them!  We are looking forward to having a great year with them!

Please send your child to school with a healthy snack each day.  We will have a 10 minute snack time in the morning, so please send in something that your child can eat within that time frame.  Some healthy snacks include:  fruit, vegetables, popcorn, crackers, etc.  Please NO candy, donuts, cookies, etc. for snack.  Water bottles are allowed at school with water only!

Math: We will take a beginning of the year math assessment to see what was retained from 1st grade.  We will also do some around the room math, this or that graphing, and math about you!

Homework: Your student will have math and spelling homework each week to complete.  Homework will go home on Monday’s and needs to be completed and returned the following Monday.  This will begin in a few weeks.

Language Arts: We will be reading stories and doing activities that go along with the story.  Our Class is a Family, First Day Jitters, and Do Unto Otter’s are a few that we will be reading.  We will be assessing reading levels and sight words in the next few weeks.

Spelling: No spelling this week. 

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Social Studies:  We will be talking about how we are part of a classroom community!
