Our Week at a Glance
December 1st-5th
Hello second grade families!
 
Please send your students to school with clothes to wear outside for the weather!  Mittens, hats, snow pants, boots, jacket, etc. are necessary!  We will be outside unless it is below zero!!
 
Please send your child to school with a healthy snack each day.  We will have a 10 minute snack time in the morning, so please send in something that your child can eat within that time frame.  Some healthy snacks include:  fruit, vegetables, popcorn, crackers, etc.  Please NO candy, donuts, cookies, etc. for snack.  Water bottles are allowed at school with water only!
 
Math: We are beginning unit 4 that is based on measurement and place value. Working on how to tell time and use clocks in story problems to determine the time. We will also be learning and exploring place value in numbers and what they represent within a whole number. 
 
Homework: Your student will have math and spelling homework each week to complete.  Homework will go home on Monday’s and needs to be completed and returned the following Monday December 8th. 
*Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night*
 
Language Arts: We are starting unit 4 discussing characters and setting. Looking closer at the character point of view and perspective throughout a story. Along with how point of view affects a story. 
 
Spelling: We are working with words that have the -or sound in them. This week our spelling words are… born, more, horn, store, sports, before, roar, oars, wore, and fork. 
*We will be having our spelling test on Friday!”
 
Social Studies:  We will be working on an introduction to our government unit. Discussing roles of the government and what they are responsible for. Along with how the government impacts our community!

Language Arts: We will be working on our opinion writing in class this week. Creating an opinion and writing reasoning to connect with our opinion statement. Being able to use evidence to support our reasoning through writing.

Math:  In math we will be continuing unit 3. We will be learning many different fact families using addition and subtraction. These strategies include: adding and subtracting within 20, and using place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. 
 
Homework: Your student will have math and spelling homework each week to complete.  Homework will go home on Monday’s and needs to be completed and returned the following Monday November, 17th.

Language Arts: We will be continuing the next couple weeks in our Government Working for Us unit. We will be talking about how individuals can participate in our government to create positive change in their communities and the country. A big portion of the unit is going to be spent learning about citizen engagement and involvement. 
 
Spelling: Our spelling words this week consist of ways to make the long u sound. Our spelling words for the week are bird, girl, never, hurt, shirt, winter, her, burn, nurse, third.
 
*We will have a spelling test on Friday*
 
Science:  We will be continuing unit 2 this week.  In this unit we will be focusing on how matter can change. We will look closer at how a liquid, gas, or solid can be affected by the heating and cooling of an object. Along with differentiating physical and chemical change.

Homework: Your student will have math and spelling homework each week to complete.  Homework will go home on Monday’s and needs to be completed and returned the following Monday October 27th.

Language Arts: We will be spending the next few weeks in our Characters Learn and Grow unit.  We will be talking about creating mental images, as well as setting and plot.  Describing the characters in the stories is also something we will be working on in this unit.  A big portion of the unit is going to be spent retelling the stories we read!
 
Spelling: Our spelling words this week consist of ways to make the long i sound. Our spelling words for the week are pie, kind, child, tie, sky, high, dry, lime, light, bright.

Hello second grade families!

Math:  In math we will be looking at numbers on a number line, adding and subtracting on a number line, skip counting by 2’s (even/odd numbers), and looking at patterns.  We are identifying coins and their values.  We will have our first unit test September 29th.

Homework: Your student will have math and spelling homework each week to complete.  Homework will go home on Monday’s and needs to be completed and returned the following Monday.  Homework for this week will need to be turned in on Monday, September 29.

Language Arts: We will be finishing our unit Habitats Around the World.  We will be reading some informative texts and start learning how to identify the Central Idea (Main topic).  We will also be looking at graphic features (title, headings, vocabulary, and pictures).

Spelling: Our spelling words this week consist of ways to make the long a sound.  Our spelling words for the week are April, play, blame, stay, cake, mail, chain, paint, break, great **We will have a spelling test on Friday. 

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Social Studies:  We will be finishing our unit about family and community.  What makes up a community?  What are some traditions in our families?  This week we are talking about primary and secondary sources.

Hello second grade families! Welcome back to school!  We are excited to meet our students and get to know them!  We are looking forward to having a great year with them!

Math: We will take a beginning of the year math assessment to see what was retained from 1st grade.  We will also do some around the room math, this or that graphing, and math about you!

Homework: Your student will have math and spelling homework each week to complete.  Homework will go home on Monday’s and needs to be completed and returned the following Monday.  This will begin in a few weeks.

Language Arts: We will be reading stories and doing activities that go along with the story.  Our Class is a Family, First Day Jitters, and Do Unto Otter’s are a few that we will be reading.  We will be assessing reading levels and sight words in the next few weeks.

Spelling: No spelling this week. 

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Social Studies:  We will be talking about how we are part of a classroom community!
