Language Arts:  We will be finishing our unit on Buying, Selling, and Making Money.  We will be talking about graphic features, compare/contrast, and story elements.  We will also be learning about silent letters.
 
Math:  We will be continuing to work on regrouping with addition and subtraction.  We will take our End of Year Assessment!

Language Arts:  This week we will be continuing to talk about Buying, Selling, and Making Money! We will be talking about the theme of the stories we are reading, how characters and settings affect the plot, and the plot element of the story. We will be discussing the schwa sound in phonics!
 
Math:  We are finishing unit 9 and reviewing regrouping in addition and subtraction.

**We will have math and spelling homework nightly.  Please make sure that your child is completing their daily work!  Reading 10-15 minutes nightly is also very important!
 
Language Arts:
This week we will begin out final unit on Making, Buying, and Selling.  We will be working on recognizing the main idea and supporting evidence, building vocabulary, and talking about how graphic features can contribute to the meaning of a story.  We will be working on words ending in -y and -ly in phonics.  Building and blending multisyllable words will also be worked on in class.
 
Math:
We will be finishing up on Unit 9 and taking our assessment.  Fraction names, parts, coins, expanded form, and subtracting with regrouping are all areas that we are focused on this week!

ELA:  We will be finishing our unit on Wind and Water Shape the Land.  We will be reading a few stories, as well as talking about the unit and real world perspectives.  For spelling we will be reviewing -er and -est suffixes and talking about how the suffixes change the meaning of the base words.  We are also doing some reading theatre and will continue for the rest of the year!
 
Math:  We will be continuing to talk about fractions, as well as place value and expanded form.  We will be talking about how money can relate to fractions!  Also measuring to the nearest 1/2 inch will be continued.

Language Arts-We will continue talking about how water and wind shape our land!  We will be reading stories about weather and talking about the main idea and details.  We will be using context clues to define words,  For spelling we will be learning about the suffix -er and -or.

Language Arts:  We will be starting our new unit this week!  It is another nonfiction unit Wind and Water Shape the Land, and we will be reading about science in the world.  We will also be studying words which mean more than one...some of the words will need an s, while other words change completely.
 
Math:  We will be finishing our unit on arrays and shapes.  We will be taking a test on the unit Friday!  We will do a review on Thursday which you can use to study for the test! Next week we will begin our final math unit of the year.  We will be reviewing regrouping and ungrouping as well.

Reading/LA:  This week we will be working on root words, adding endings to root words, blending, multisyllable words.  We will be finishing our unit on Pioneers in Flight.  Our big goals this unit have been to be able to distinguish between 1st and 3rd person point of views, the author's purpose for writing the article, and details that support both!
 
Math:  We will be continuing with 2 and 3D shapes and their attributes.  We are working on being able to tell how they are alike and similar.  Words like:  quadrilaterals, trapezoids, hexagons, octagons, pentagons, cubes, spheres, cones, pyramid, rectangular prisms, vertices, ray, line segments, lines, points, right angle are all things the kids should be able to identify!

May Madness Basket:  2nd grade is collecting cooking/baking items for our May Madness basket.  Items include:  cookbooks, utensils, gift cards, baking supplies, etc.  If you could donate an item to our basket it would be appreciated!!  If you would like to send in $ we will shop for items to fill the basket!  Thanks!!

Math:  We will be starting a unit on shapes.  We will be looking at 2 and 3 dimensional shapes and learning about their attributes.
 
There will be math and spelling homework to complete nightly.  Also, please make sure that your child is reading 15 minutes a night at home!

We will not have a spelling test this week.  We will be doing a review of what we have learned in Unit 6!  Spelling Tests will resume after break!  
 
Reading-We will be finishing up folktales and fables.  We will be taking our Unit 6 Assessment!  We will be spending some time this week focusing on nouns, adjectives, and verbs.  We will continue with close reading and comprehending what we are reading...what do the words really mean!
 
Math-We will be measuring using meters and yards.  We will be gathering information on things that we measure (arm span, standing jumps) to put together a frequency table and a line plot (graph).  
 
NO SCHOOL-March 25-29 (SPRING BREAK)

March 11-15

Reading/Language Arts:  We will be wrapping up our Unit on folktales and fables.  We will be comparing and contrasting the stories that we have read over the past few weeks.  We have been talking about morals/lessons, plots, and using context clues to help us with our understanding of the stories.  We have also been talking about nouns, adjectives, and verbs along with antonyms and synonyms.
 
Math:  We will be starting our Unit 7.  We will continue to add and subtract so it is important that your student knows their basic facts.  We will be adding up to 4 addends.  We will also be measuring yards.

It was so nice to see so many of you at the World Culture Fair.  The kids had an awesome time learning about Kenya.  If you were unable to attend, ask your student what they learned and look at their Kenya book they brought home!  Such a fun time!!
 
Spelling words:  book, look, cook, shook, foot, good, stood, wood, push, put
 
Math:  We will continue talking and learning about 2 step math problems and graphing.  New material will include shapes, arrays, and reviewing strategies to help us with our addition and subtraction.  It is important that the basic addition and subtraction facts are being practiced!!
 
Reading/Language Arts:  We will continue to talk about folktales, fables, myths, and legends.  Our big question we are working on answering is how different cultures can help us learn!  We are really taking a close look at the stories to see what context clues the author gives us to answer the following:  What is the main idea of the story?  What are the supporting details?  What is the lesson that we are learning from the story?  
 
We will also be working on writing an animal research paper.  We will learn about taking notes, putting the notes into sentences, and then turn our sentences into a short report!

Language Arts:  We will begin a new unit on Tales That Teach Us.  How can we learn from different cultures?  We will read stories from around the world and see how they are the same/different!  We will be talking about the genre fables and folktales.  We will continue working on our sight words and our high frequency words.  This week we will also be breaking apart short passages and closely reading through them to find the main idea and supporting details.
 
Math:  We will be continuing with addition and subtraction strategies, however we will be starting two-step problems!  Use the strategy that works best for individual word problems!  We will also be continuing with our graphs (pictographs and bar graphs).  I am also teaching them about line graphs!

February 20-World Culture Fair-Come travel the school from 4:30-6:15 and see all the work the kids have put into learning about new countries!  Ours is KENYA!!

Valentine's Day-February 14

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

On February 14th, we will have a Valentine exchange. We have 23 students in our class. Students are not required to bring Valentines, but, if they choose to do so, please ensure that a valentine is included for every student in our class. Cards can be store bought or handmade. 

We have a student with a peanut allergy. Please refrain from bringing any candy to school that contains peanuts.

Wednesday the 14th will also be Pink and Red Dress Day!
