Look at the Week 5-4-26

Hello first grade families!

Here is a look at our week.

Language Arts: This week we will continue the last unit in our Benchmark curriculum. Unit 10 is titled "Exploring Sound, Light, and Heat," is primarily about how these different forms of energy impact our daily lives. Essential Question: Students work toward answering, "How would our lives be different without sound, light, and heat?".

Content Integration: This unit heavily integrates Physical Science concepts with literacy, helping students build world knowledge while improving reading comprehension.

Core Concepts: Lessons focus on identifying sources of energy, movement, and how we experience light and sound through our senses.

We will be taking a reading comprehension assessment on Friday.

Phonics: Complex vowel spellings for the /ô/ sound, including: aw (as in saw or draw) au (as in haul or fault) al (as in talk or walk) augh (as in caught or taught).

Spelling: This week’s spelling words are: call, wall, chalk, salt, fault, fault, outlaw, straw, talk, &, caught. Spelling test will be given Friday.

Science: We will continue a unit called Energy all around us. We will explore energy by doing experiments.

Sound: Use "singing spoons" and rubber bands to visualize vibrations.

Light: Conduct "dark room" experiments where students try to identify objects with no light versus a small flashlight.

Heat: Observe the effect of sunlight on different surfaces like sand, soil, or water and record temperature changes.

Shadows: Use flashlights and various objects to understand how light traveling in a straight path forms shadows when blocked.

Math: This week we will continue unit 9 in our final unit in our Everyday Math curriculum. Unit 9 focuses on Two-Digit Addition and Subtraction and Review. Students learn to solve real-world problems, such as comparing prices and buying items, by adding and subtracting 1-digit numbers, decade numbers (like 40 or 50), and 2-digit numbers.

Students explore these main topics throughout the unit:

  • Two-Digit Operations: Adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers, including "decade numbers" like 40 or 50.
  • Real-World Math: Solving number stories involving buying items from a school store or vending machine and comparing prices.
  • Comparing Numbers: Using symbols like <, >, and =to show relationships between different values.
  • Measurement: Using tools like paper-clip rulers to measure objects, building a conceptual foundation for standard rulers in 2nd grade.

Parents can support functional phonics by encouraging phonemic awareness (hearing individual sounds in words), practicing letter-sound correspondence, blending sounds to read words, and making reading a fun, daily activities. Students will have a functional phonics homework activity nightly.

Math: This week we will complete unit five in our Everyday math curriculum. Unit 5 is titled "Place Value and Comparisons". The unit shifts focus from basic counting to understanding how numbers are structured and how they relate to one another.
